An old video but worth sharing again.
Box explores the synthesis of real and digital space through projection-mapping on moving surfaces. The short film documents a live performance, captured entirely in camera.
Bot & Dolly produced this work to serve as both an artistic statement and technical demonstration. It is the culmination of multiple technologies, including large scale robotics, projection mapping, and software engineering. We believe this methodology has tremendous potential to radically transform theatrical presentations, and define new genres of expression.
Find out exactly how “Box” was created in our exclusive behind the scenes video:

INORI – PRAYER- from WOW inc on Vimeo.
About the Work
The latest work to utilize real time tracking and face projection mapping using a state of the art 1000 fps projector and ultra high speed sensing, “INORI-PRAYER-,“ has been released. This project was born when Nobumichi Asai (WOW) approached collaborators TOKYO?lab.tokyo.jp/?, the dancing duo AyaBambi, and the Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory at the University of Tokyo.
This project began when songs were created about ‘life,’ a theme proposed by Tanigawa (TOKYO), who acted as this project’s director. Creative and technical director Asai (WOW) and CG director Shingo Abe (WOW) completed visual production and programming based on inspiration they obtained from the songs. Aya Sato added the choreography, and TOKYO completed the project by making it into a video.
‘Radioactive’ is the inspiration that Asai felt from music. ‘Radioactive’ wields destructive power, and from that brings ‘death’, ‘suffering’, and ‘sadness’. And then, the ‘opportunity’ to overcome those things. Accompanied by the overwhelming performance of AyaBambi, a visual synchronization of black tears, skulls, faces being severed, Noh Masks of agony and the Heart Sutra have sublimated into a single piece of work.
The face mapping system made it possible to follow intense performances, which was impossible until now, thanks to the use of the state of the art 1000 fps projector DynaFlash?1 and ultra high speed sensing. The initial dilemma of speeding up the tracking to the detriment of performance latitude was resolved by the WOW team, Professor Watanabe, and Tomoaki Teshima (EXVISION), who trimmed several milliseconds during a trial and error period that lasted approximately three months, enabling the completion of this system?2. The projected image looks like it is integrated into part of the skin, and the expressions on a subject’s face, when it is distorted or transformed, are exponentially enhanced.
*1: Jointly developed by the Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory at the University of Tokyo and Tokyo Electron Device, and commercialized by Tokyo Electron Device.
*2: Dynamic projection mapping technology, developed by the Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, was used for hand tracking and projection mapping. Face mapping technology, developed by WOW Inc., was used for facial tracking.

Artificially Awake is the brand name for VJ content produced by Kaine Van Riel. A Visual Effects artist and event production designer based in London, England.
Over the years Artificially Awake’s visuals have gained great weight and notoriety within the music scene for being some of the most impactful and synchronous visuals on the market.
Originally educated in computer generated imagery for film, Kaine swiftly made his mark on the industry by transitioning into the world of musical visualization. Developing a new and yet unseen way of manipulating an audience’s perception of video.
He accomplished this by producing mind bending illusionary 3D animations into a format which could be perceived as being the correct perspective from any given angle. Thereby fulfilling the illusion of being within a digital environment imagined by the artist himself.
This notion propelled artificially awake to become a leader in illusionary content creation for festivals, stage performances, commercial applications, alongside the notorious Ibiza music scene where it all began!
Since founding Artificially Awake, Kaine has worked independently as well as among teams of talented production companies on what can only be described as one of the most impressive resume’s seen to date.

Full Length / Live Face Projection Mapping with Kat Von D from Wildbytes on Vimeo.
First-ever real-time face tracking and projection mapping performed at a live event, on stage. ALL images recorded live, No post-production added.
A live / real-time face projection mapping event where 3D rendered images were projected over Kat Von D’s face, following accurately her movements. Custom software and a high-end tracking system were used to track her body movements and adapt the projection content in real-time to her torso, neck and face. Original music composition played live by a string quartet.
