Björk: The Gate

Björk: The Gate – NOWNESS from NOWNESS on Vimeo.

For the first release from her forthcoming new album, co-produced by Arca, Björk has teamed up with a super-troupe of contributors to create a hallucinogenic new video. Artist Andrew Thomas Huang lends his tech-savvy hand to envision a kaleidoscopic world inhabited by the singer-songwriter, who is clad in an iridescent otherworldly garment designed by Gucci’s Alessandro Michele. Artificial Intelligence Can Create Faces Never Before Seen

Google AI Faces
By Graham Templeton on June 8, 2017
When you’re an A.I. researcher at Google, even your days off are filled with neural nets. Mike Tyka is a Google scientist who recently helped create the company’s DeepDream venture, but this week he posted details of a personal project that could someday make DeepDream seem primitive. That famous program works by basically blending together elements of other pictures, and then modifying that collage, but Tyka’s new approach takes the much more difficult and potentially rewarding path: teaching an A.I. to create all-new portraits from scratch.
“I don’t mind if the results are not necessarily realistic but fine texture is important no matter what even if it’s surreal but [high-resolution] texture,” Tyka commented Tuesday on his blog.
How It Works
The approach uses “generative adversarial networks” (GANs) to refine the A.I.’s abilities over time. GANs are neural networks that work in opposition to one another; one GAN draws a picture from scratch (the generative part) and another attempts to tell whether the picture is real or A.I.-generated (the adversarial part). The GANs will eventually trend toward better and better looking portraits, as one learns to trick its adversary network into misidentifying its creations as real. When this happens, the falsifying network learns from its mistake, and gets better at picking out false pictures in the future. In this way, both the generative and adversarial abilities of the system progress together, and one always keeps driving evolution in the other.

Featured Artist: Artificially Awake

Artificially Awake is the brand name for VJ content produced by Kaine Van Riel. A Visual Effects artist and event production designer based in London, England.

Over the years Artificially Awake’s visuals have gained great weight and notoriety within the music scene for being some of the most impactful and synchronous visuals on the market.

Originally educated in computer generated imagery for film, Kaine swiftly made his mark on the industry by transitioning into the world of musical visualization. Developing a new and yet unseen way of manipulating an audience’s perception of video.

He accomplished this by producing mind bending illusionary 3D animations into a format which could be perceived as being the correct perspective from any given angle. Thereby fulfilling the illusion of being within a digital environment imagined by the artist himself.

This notion propelled artificially awake to become a leader in illusionary content creation for festivals, stage performances, commercial applications, alongside the notorious Ibiza music scene where it all began!

Since founding Artificially Awake, Kaine has worked independently as well as among teams of talented production companies on what can only be described as one of the most impressive resume’s seen to date.

Professionals associate in a variety of ways. For the more established artistic paths there are established collaborations and unions which to associate with, but for other and less established paths it’s important to take matters into your own hands. In 2012, Devon Miles and Kyle Lyons established The International VJ Exchange Program which allows video artists from all over the world to get to know eachother, swap knowledge, jobs and start collaborations. I decided to check it out, and booked a flight down to the hub of The International VJ Exchange Program, Kyle Lyons studio in Valencia, Spain.

Kyle Lyons has been in the scene since the 90’s, and has been a central contributor to the live video art scene through his stock-footage company VJloops.com. From his page he sells stock footage for live visuals, art and the entertainment industry, but he also invites other artists to sell their stock footage on his site as well. You can see my stock footage here.

Through my stay we tried out techniques such as Timelapse (pictures taken in a set interval to speed up time greatly) and Hyperlapse (moving timelapse), and also shot Kyles application for Shutterstock Stories above together with Roman O. Heller, who in addition to being an amazing videographer also is an incredible guy.

We all know artistic opportunities mainly come through word of mouth, and by associating yourself with professionals worldwide, you´ll see unlimited potential for collaborations and friendships. A global art-form always has local variations, and its always interesting to see how an artists cultural heritage shapes his works.

For your stock footage needs, please visit VJloops.com. To be part of The International VJ Exchange Project, please contact Kyle Lyons or Devon Miles. Many thanks to Kyle for hosting me, for refining my knowledge about the art of timelapses and for putting up with me dragging sand all over his studio.

Oh, and did I mention that the studio is in Spain?
